Memory Portrait of Ellie – Step 2

November 23, 2010 By Carol McIntyre

First layer of paint (click to enlarge)

Once the sketch of Ellie was approved, I then traced it onto my canvas. But I should mention that all of my canvases are textured with broad strokes of a palette knife using gesso. I do not like the texture or look of canvas.

I paint in the large shapes of Ellie using warm colors (i.e., yellow & pink) where the sun hits her and cool colors (i.e., greens, purple, etc.) for the shadow areas. Her eyes are painted black. The painting reads very flat at this stage and will continue that way for the next couple of stages.

Because she is a yellowish colored dog, I am going to use my yellow-purple palette for my colors. Every painting I paint has its own color palette based on the color opposites.
